Flip Your Lid

A Mini-Intensive on Macrotransitions & Flips

Are you looking to up your transition game? Interested in "circus-style" rope? Join us for a mini-intensive with Cait, where they will teach us two different fun "flip" transitions! Or join us for Rope 101: Intro To Rope.

Description

Flip Your Lid Mini-Intensive:

  • Usually when we do suspension transitions, we work with one upline at a time, right? And while we can make dramatic changes in position with one upline, our bottoms usually remain on the same plane (think face-up to inversion, or side suspension to single futo). What if we could make our bottoms do a 180° sideways barrel roll from face-up to face-down in one transition? Or do a sideways flip from a face-down position to upright in one transition? This mini-intensive will teach you how to do just that! These "macrotransitions," as Cait likes to think of them, are fun, interesting alternatives to the transitions we usually perform, and are sure to have you "flipping out!"
  • Participants should come with a partner, as these suspensions aren't very self-tie friendly. Both participants should be experienced in dynamic suspensions - this should not be your first suspension class! Tops should be able to tie a chest harness that can be loaded from the back and one that can be loaded from the front and back simultaneously; it doesn't matter if the arms are free or bound. Tops should also be able to tie a hip harness that can be loaded from the front, and a futomomo that can be loaded from both the inside and the outside simultaneously. If you need recommendations for harnesses to learn before this class, please reach out to us. Tops should be very comfortable managing multiple uplines and with transitions. Bottoms should be comfortable with suspension transitions, body awareness, active bottoming, and communicating with their top while in suspension.
  • The class will run the full 3 hours with a 15-minute break about halfway through between the two flips. We will not be having our usual free-tying time following the class this month.

We'll also have a beginner class going on for the first half of this time block! In Rope 101: Intro To Rope, we will learn the fundamentals of rope or shibari, including consent & negotiation, general rope safety, the differences between multiple types of rope, and some common knots. This class is ideal for students with no previous rope experience.

Suspending at Box Tie Studio: If you want to do any partial or full suspension, you must be vetted to do so. This means you must be familiar with tying harnesses, hangers, and uplines. If you want to be vetted to do suspensions at Box Tie Studio, please reach out to Cait ahead of time (cait@boxtiestudio.org).

Group Rules: Please review our group rules. You can also print and sign our Liability Waiver and Code of Conduct Agreement from the same page on our website. If you don't, we'll have you sign them when you check in. If you have signed these previously, you don't need to sign them again.

COVID Policies:

  • All attendees are required to be vaccinated against COVID, and WE WILL CHECK YOUR ID AND PROOF OF VACCINATION AT THE DOOR. If you can't be vaccinated for legitimate reasons, please reach out to us beforehand. You can securely send photos of your ID and vax card to Cait (cait@boxtiestudio.org) ahead of time if you'd like. If we've checked your ID and vax info before, we don't need to check it again.
  • Please don't attend if you're feeling ill or exhibiting any symptoms of COVID-19 (review symptoms here). If you can't attend due to illness, we'll refund your tickets fully. We don't care what the CDC says about isolation; if you test positive for COVID within 5 days of this class, have had a known exposure, or are feeling ill, please do not come and spread your germs.

Buying Tickets & Event Capacity:

  • We are implementing a maximum capacity of 10 tying pairs to the intensive due to limited space, so if you want to come, you should quickly reserve your tickets online! Rope 101 will be limited space as well.
  • If you want to avoid Forbidden Tickets's fees, you can select the registration-only ticket and pay an alternate way. We accept cash, checks, credit/debit cards, PayPal (@BoxTieStudio), Venmo (@boxtiestudio), and Cashapp ($ropespaced). If you pay one of these ways ahead of time (not at the door), please indicate which order it's for (the email address on your order works).
  • Our pricing for this intensive is a little different: we're offering 3 different tiers. The "solidarity" tickets are $45/couple and are for people who actually need them. They are for people who struggle to meet their basic needs; they aren't a "sale," early-bird pricing, a cheaper alternative, or a way to attend more workshops within your budget. To quote Karada House, "Solidarity means making space for fellow queer people GLOBALLY. It means paying more when you can so that we can keep existing. It means paying more when you can so that our facilitators can make living wages." The "regular" tickets are $60/couple. Finally, the "supporter" tickets are $75/couple and are for individuals with more expendable income; the extra charge goes directly to supporting us and keeping us sustainable, and therefore giving us the ability to offer the "solidarity" tickets.
  • Our pricing for Rope 101 is our usual sliding scale of $15-$35 per person.

What/Who To Bring & Wear:

  • Bring a blanket or yoga mat to sit or tie on, if desired; there are a few chairs.
  • Also bring water, rope, safety shears, and your rigging gear. We will have 8 bamboo hard points set up. 2 of the other hard point spots will need to be set up with your gear.
  • We will have loaner rope available to borrow and raw jute and synthetic rope for sale.
  • Dress comfortably in clothing that isn't too loose or flowy and still permits a full range of motion (many people wear workout clothing). Vanilla to the door, no nudity inside; genitals and anuses must be covered.
  • This is an intensive designed for tying pairs; we will expect you to come already partnered up.

Parking & Arrival Time:

  • Doors open at 12:00. Please try to arrive early! We will be closing the doors at 12:30 and making opening remarks so we can start ASAP. If you know you're going to be late, please text Cait at (207) 558-2930. If you arrive and the door is locked, please knock loudly and/or call Cait, as our doorbell is broken :(
  • There is plenty of parking. When you turn onto Ingersoll Drive, the parking lot is the first left, and we are the first building on the left. We are the second-floor end unit; you'll see large windows and skylights from outside. Please text Cait at (207) 558-2930 if you have trouble finding us.

Miscellaneous:

  • No guns or other weapons are allowed on the premises.
  • There is no smoking indoors. Please step outside to smoke.
  • Use of drugs and/or alcohol is not allowed. If you are suspected to be under the influence, you will be ejected from the event without a refund.
  • We have a dog and there will likely be dog fur throughout the studio, although we do our best to keep it as clean as possible. If you're allergic, please take note.
  • There are 3 short stairs to get into the building and a carpeted staircase inside to get upstairs to the studio. Unfortunately, there is no elevator access.

If you have any other questions, please reach out to us! You can also contact @ropespaced (Cait), @Griffin207 (Jack), @ragdollbaby (Grace), or @Bratty_Beck (Beck) on FetLife. Otherwise, we hope to see you there!
